Project Initiation

Business Request Initiation

The process of Enterprise Application Management starts with the first step which is Business Request Initiation. The developer team receives requests from different business managers or stakeholders to either develop, buy or improve a certain application. The decision is taken by the business management considering different factors.

Preliminary Analysis

"Preliminary Analysis" refers to the process that takes place in the very beginning before any step is taken towards the development or procurement of a solution. It is the process that is necessary to be able to evaluate which solution should be aimed for in the first place. It is important because immediately going for a solution without thorough prior analysis can result in major losses of resources.

The main Goal of the Preliminary Analysis is the derivation of all the fundamental Requirements that need to be fulfilled to successfully respond to the initiative Business Request(s). Practically, the output of this process is a Powerpoint Presentation that illustrates and explains these Requirements. The person conducting the Analysis process and preparing the Presentation (who can be the Manager or any member of the Enterprise Application team) will be referred to as "Analyst" in this context.

The derivation of the Requirements generally follows a 3-phase-procedure where each phase will be described in detail in the following chapters:

However, since the specific situation and thus, the amount and type of Requirements, are very different from case to case, the Preliminary Analysis process does not require to execute these phases in chronological order but is kept flexible and adaptable to any possible situation. This is achieved by organizing iterative meetings where the Analyst presents their results from each of these three phases (i.e. the Powerpoint Presentation) to the Stakeholders and fixes their Presentation until feedback from the Stakeholders does not reveal any more issues or misunderstandings. So the three phases only serve as guideline for the generation of the output where the specific process and content adapts to the requirements, limitations and possibilities of the given situation.
